The Europe and Central Asia (ECA) division of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking a highly motivated candidate to provide administrative support to the team. The Europe and Central Asia division works to advance human rights throughout Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and Turkey and conducts a wide range of work, including investigation, report writing, advocacy, multimedia, social media and other media work.

This is a full-time position and will be based in our New York office. The candidate will be expected to work at least three days per week in the office. This position reports to the Deputy Director of the ECA Division, also based in the New York office, and supports the entire division, particularly those working on Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, and countries in Central Asia and the South Caucasus.

Responsibilities:

  1. Provide day-to-day administrative support to Division staff located in multiple countries, including scheduling internal and external meetings, making travel arrangements, assisting with processing expense reports and invoices, preparing for and taking notes at meetings, and maintaining web pages;
  2. Assist with procurement of visas and other travel documents, create and maintain extensive filing and archiving systems, create and update contact data bases and filing and archiving systems, and respond to requests for information;
  3. Assist with preparing, drafting, proofreading, editing, formatting, coding, and/or distributing materials such as news releases, reports, tables, charts, briefing papers, op‑eds, publications and text and image web content;
  4. Maintain communication among HRW offices, global staff, and external partners; work closely with the other ECA associate, based in Europe, to ensure effective coordination, handover and completion of time-sensitive tasks and other workflow across time-zones;
  5. Manage the transmitting of documents to and from translators;
  6. Assist with desk research, news monitoring, electronic/social media clippings, advocacy contacts mapping and related research, as required, and managing and, in some cases, carrying out translations;
  7. Assist with planning and executing roundtables and special events with visitors;
  8. Attend external meetings and events, including with researchers and other colleagues, when needed;
  9. Assist with the day-to-day running of the ECA advisory committee, including organizing meetings, and special events;
  10. Assist with recruiting, onboarding, mentoring, and coordinating interns, and recruiting division staff; and
  11. Carry out other duties as required.

Qualifications:

Education: A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent working experience, in human rights, international relations, social science or a related field is required.

Experience:A minimum of one year of relevant work experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Prior office/administration experience and strong organizational skills are required.
  2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required; Excellent reading and oral communications skills in Russian are required.
  3. Interest in international human rights is required.
  4. Interpersonal skills and ability to work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks are required.
  5. Ability to make sound decisions consistent with functions is required.
  6. Ability to prioritize with minimal supervision and work independently as well as function as a member of a team with staff in multiple locations globally is required.
  7. Attention to detail and ability to communicate clearly and professionally via email, including in formal correspondence with external interlocutors in government and international organizations is required.
  8. Ability to efficiently and proactively track workflow is required.
  9. Proficiency in computer packages including MS Office applications is required.

Salary and Benefits: The salary range for this position is 60,001 – 64,328 USD. Human Rights Watch offers competitive salary and comprehensive employer-paid benefits.
