General Assembly Technician |

Department: Manufacturing / Operations
Reports To: Production Supervisor / Manufacturing Manager
Employment Type: Full-Time
Work Location: On-site manufacturing facility

Pay: $21.00 - $25.00 DOE

Position Summary

The General Assembly Technician supports the build and assembly of transit and automotive vehicles through hands-on installation of mechanical, electrical, body, and interior systems . This role requires versatility across multiple trades, including mechanical assembly, basic electrical work, fiberglass/composite body installation, and carpentry-style interior fabrication.

Technicians work from engineering drawings, work instructions, and bills of material to assemble vehicles that meet safety, quality, and performance standards.

Key Responsibilities Mechanical Assembly

• Install mechanical components including brackets, doors, seating systems, HVAC units, suspension and steering components, fasteners, and hardware

• Perform torque-controlled fastening using calibrated tools

• Align and fit components to meet dimensional and functional requirements

• Identify and report fitment issues, damaged parts, or drawing discrepancies

Electrical Assembly

• Route, secure, and terminate wiring and cable harnesses

• Install electrical components such as switches, lighting, displays, sensors, batteries, and control modules

• Perform wire stripping, crimping, and connector installation per IPC/WHMA-A-620 or equivalent standards

• Conduct basic continuity checks and functional testing

Fiberglass & Body Assembly

• Install fiberglass and composite body panels, roof caps, access doors, insulation, and exterior trim

• Drill, bond, seal, and fasten composite components using adhesives, sealants, and mechanical fasteners

• Perform minor trimming, sanding, surface prep, and finishing as needed

• Ensure proper panel alignment, gaps, and cosmetic appearance

Carpentry & Interior Build-Out

• Build and install interior structures including flooring, walls, cabinetry, panels, seating mounts, and trim

• Cut, fit, and assemble wood, laminate, composite, and lightweight metal materials

• Use hand and power tools to fabricate and install interior components

General Assembly & Finishing

• Install finishing components such as seat assemblies, lighting panels, railings, and enclosures

• Apply trim, moldings, and sealants

• Clean and prepare completed vehicles for inspection or presentation

• Use hand tools, power tools, measuring tools, templates, and jigs

Quality & Documentation

• Follow work instructions, drawings, torque specifications, and quality checkpoints

• Complete in-process inspections and required documentation

• Support rework, corrective actions, and quality investigations

• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace in accordance with 5S principles

Safety & Teamwork

• Comply with all safety policies, PPE requirements, and lockout/tagout procedures

• Participate in safety meetings and continuous improvement initiatives

• Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams to meet build schedules

Required Skills & Qualifications

• 2+ years of experience in manufacturing, vehicle assembly, or a skilled trade environment

• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to read engineering drawings and schematics

• Basic electrical assembly experience (wire routing, connectors, terminations)

• Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and measuring equipment

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with strong attention to detail

Preferred Experience

• Transit bus, shuttle, truck, RV, or specialty vehicle manufacturing

• Experience with fiberglass or composite body components

• Carpentry or interior fabrication experience in a manufacturing environment

• Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards or certification

• Experience with adhesives, sealants, and bonding processes

• Exposure to lean manufacturing or continuous improvement practices

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, bend, kneel, and work in confined spaces for extended periods

• Ability to lift up to 40 lbs with or without assistance

• Ability to safely use hand and power tools

Work Environment

• Manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, adhesives, mechanical equipment, and varying temperatures

• May require working on elevated platforms or inside vehicle structures
